BLOCK GASKET, STUFFING BOX, GREASED GASKET

A stuffing box is a shaft seal. It is used for the seal between a rotating spindle and its casing when the casing is used to constrain a liquid. This liquid could for instance be oil, acid, a salt or water. The seal has to prevent the liquid from leaking along the spindle.

Applications for stuffing boxes are for example the propeller shafts of ships and the rotating spindle of centrifugal pumps.
